Pretty Packaging: New York City Garbage

Efficiently designed packaging is the cornerstone to grabbing any consumer's eye!

Something Artist Justin Gignac is proving with his New York City Garbage sculptures. With a simple design and dynamic use of... well garbage, people from all over the world are buying up his little works of art.

Gignac writes:
"In 2001, I started selling garbage. 100% authentic New York City Garbage. The trash is hand-picked and arranged in Lucite cubes that are signed, numbered, and dated. Today, more than 1,000 cubes have been sold to over 25 countries."

You can nab one of the "regular" cubes for $50 while limited edition cubes, like from the World Series or New Year's Eve in Times Square, will run you around $100.

This just goes to show you with a creative concept, well executed packaging and a unique product; even garbage can sell!

We don't know about you but, we're starting to look through our trash bins in the Slick Lab for some valuable goodies to get rich from.

Interactive Design: London's New Year's Eve Experience

When you think of ringing in the New Year you almost ALWAYS think of Fireworks. And, like most of us, if you've seen one fireworks show you've seen them all.

But, if you're celebrating New Year's Eve 2014 along London's South Bank, you'll be experiencing the usual fireworks in a brand new way.

Prepare for the world's first multi-sensory fireworks display!

Food scientists Bompass & Parr will release "floating orange bubbles, and when you pop them you will get this really zesty Spanish orange flavor coming out, you will have peach snow coming from the sky and banana confetti that is edible."

We're going to actually let people tast the fireworks. And they're fruity. You will see red in the sky, and you'll smell strawberry," Bompass added.

That's a pretty unique spin to a fairly traditional celebration!

And, according to Mayor Boris Johnson, "London is after all the city of firsts and this approach to our New Year's Eve celebration will add to the magic on the night, whether experienced at home or in town."

Plus, the first-ever London New Year's Eve fireworks app will add to the experience of watching the display from home.

What a truly creative way to make News Year's Eve fully interactive! Start 2014 with a tasty burst of inspiration!

Creative Color: 2014 is The Year of Radiant Orchid

According to the hue gurus at Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems, this flowery pinky-purple is the color we're going to be craving in the coming year!
For nearly 50 year, Pantone has been inspiring design professional with products, services and leading technology for the colorful exploration and expression of creativity.
The PANTONE name is know worldwide as the standard language for color communication from designer to manufacturer to retail customer.
Suddenly, the color has been showing up everywhere and you can be sure that next year it's going to be draped all over every type of palette possible.

Radiant Orchid is exactly number 18-3224 on Pantone's color chart and described as an "enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones," says American color specialist, Leatrice Eiseman.

We at the SLICK lab are really loving this beautiful and vibrant color! It's feminine but, not too girly. And, it's bold enough to be worn or appreciated by the masculine alike.

It's time to get Creative and splash this captivating color everywhere!

And in case you're curious about past winners or "The Psychology of Color":

Graphic Design: DIY Artwork

We all Love customized Art!

French Graphic Designer Alexandre Laclaverie has designed a DIY (Do It Yourself) customizable handmade poster, made of more than 6000 triangles, that are detachable.

The idea behind it is to allow people to draw or write whatever they want and create their own personal work of art.

The sheets of colored paper are layered in between two black sheets.  This design allows for depth as well as texture in the artwork.

What a neat idea!

The possibilities are almost endless! Let's get Creative!!

If you're interested in purchasing the customizable poster you can get it here.

Space & Design: Photoshop-Free Art

Photoshop is definitely our friend! But, now and again we like to be purists and rely solely on a perfect Design.

Enter Korean artist Jee Young Lee who staged her tiny (3.6 x 4.1 x 2.4 meter) studio apartment in Seoul into surrealistic creations.

Her exhibition "Stage of Mind" takes advantage of the small space and turns it into sometimes a dreamworld and others, a nightmare. The artist build the intricate scenes herself and often takes weeks or even months to make.

According to BoredPanda:
"...the photography sets and [the artist's] roles in them tell a particular story about her personal life experiences or resurrect traditional Korean fables or other cultural heritage from around the world. Her work is a deep self-reflection for the artist and a means to explore her psychological identity."
These are wonderful examples of how important attention to detail is:

What a fantastic and creative use of Space and Design! I think it's time to mix up the look of the SLICK Lab!

It just goes to show that you can use any space to your advantage and that inspiration for Design can come from anywhere.

Check out more of Lee's creations here.

Ad Campaign: America's War on Irrational Fear

An ongoing Ad Campaign from The War On Irrational Feara campaign of Incitement Design, a socially conscious creative agency in New York City.

Regardless of your political views you have to admit that these grab your attention. Which is what a really good Ad is supposed to do.

From the Images to the facts listed, these clever Ads definitely cast a light on the subject of "Irrational Fears." Some might argue that the advertisements are poking fun at the very serious subject of "Terrorism" but, that's their message and they drive it pretty clearly. So, either way you have to appreciate that they hit their target market.

I'm curious to see what else comes from this group. They've also put together a mock newscast on their site... To give you an idea here's the opening titles: "Lightning strikes, dog attacks, and bathtub drownings individually result in more American deaths than terrorism. If we reacted to those threats the way we do terrorism..."

You can see the rest of the posters and download here.

Helvetica: The Perfume

We're all a fan of Helvetica: The Font. Who wouldn't be... It's Modern, It's easy to read... It's Perfection!

We'll someone decided to "bottle" that perfection and sell it. The Scent? Well, it's a combination of "Air. Water. You." So basically... Nothing.

We're definitely having a laugh over here at the SLICK Creative Lab! According to the website
"In 1957, Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffman set out to create a new sans-serif typeface for the Swiss design market. Their goal: to create a highly legible and completely neutral expression of the Modernist design movement to which they belonged. This typeface was to have to intrinsic meaning, allowing the content to convey the message.
Helvetica has gone on to become arguably the most ubiquitous and widely used typeface in history.
It is in this spirit that we have created the ultimate Modernist perfume - a scent distilled down to only the purest and most essential elements to allow you, the content to convey your message with the most clarity."
You can actually purchase a bottle if you have $62 + shipping & handling to waste... errrr... we mean... to spend on "The answer for every unanswered question."

Bizarre Branding: Popular Brands on Unexpected Products

Solid Branding can see a product through countless generations. How powerful is good Branding?

What if you stepped into an alternate reality where McDonald's was the King of Computers? Or, what if M&Ms made colorful assorted bullets instead of candy coated chocolates?

Russian designer Ilya Kalimulin imagined such a world and created an interesting gallery of such products. He placed well-known brands and their unmistakable Logo onto products you'd probably never associate with the brands.

It's an interesting commentary on the power of Branding.

It feels pretty bizarre to see M&Ms branding on bullets and even more frightening to picture the Lipton Tea logo on a pack of Cigarettes.

But, whatever it is, it definitely leaves you thinking about the inspired feeling you get, when you see a popular company's brand, and how that feeling might change if/had they made a different product.

Kalimulin's website is all in Russian, but definitely worth checking out, to see all of his inspired creations.
